Waggin’ Train & Canyon Creek Ranch Jerky Treats Causing Dog Sickness

Close to 1,000 dogs have been reported sick after eating chicken jerky pet treats. These treats were made in China and have caused a wave of complaints from pet owners.

The FDA has related a report showing 900 cases of illness and deaths since Nov. 2011. The report also warns pet owners to be on the lookout due to continuous issues with pet food products imported from China. Complains are still growing and it is putting pressure on the FDA to solve the problem. The agency is hearing many reports from pet owners from problems from vomiting, diarrhea and kidney failure. The FDA has sent inspectors to the plants in China that make these jerky treats but the results of the inspectors findings are not public yet.

Scientists have also been running tests on these pet treats but have been unable to find any toxins in the treats that would cause the types of illness being reported. Various brands of these treats have been reported to cause illness. Some include Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brands produced by Nestle Purina PetCare Co., and Milo’s Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats. All brands listed above are produced by the Del Monte corp. and JOC Great Wall Corp. Ltd. of Nanjing, China.

The manufactures were questioned and insisted that their chicken jerky treats are safe and not related to any illness complaints. In a recent interview with a dog owner, the owner stated that they were paid $100 from Milo’s Kitchen in exchange for a release of liability.  Also, a spokesman for Waggin’ Train, Bill Salzman, said last month that the firm also negotiates agreements with complaining pet owners individually. The problem is that in most states, pets are regarded as property and there is little change of recovering damages that exceed beyond the pets worth. Most lawyers will not work a case like this due to the small amount of money involved. If you suspect that your pet has gotten sick from these treats, make sure to submit a complaint to the FDA here.
